Beyond Productivity: Decisions That Drive Trust
For years, leadership development has focused heavily on productivity.

Clarify the goal.
Identify the obstacles.
Create the plan.
Build accountability.
Measure the results.

And productivity matters.

Businesses need revenue. Leaders need results. Teams need to perform. Strong intentions alone do not make payroll, increase margins, serve customers, or build sustainable organizations.

But after years of working with high-performing leaders and teams, I’ve come to recognize something deeper:

Productivity is not the whole answer.

Underneath sustainable performance is something far more fundamental.

Trust.

EVERY RESULT BEGINS WITH A DECISION

Think about what happens every day inside an organization.

Someone makes a hiring decision.

A leader determines a priority.

A team decides where to invest its time.

Someone chooses whether to have the difficult conversation—or avoid it.

A commitment is made.

A deadline is set.

A promise is kept—or it isn’t.

We often look at these decisions based on the immediate outcome. But every decision does something else, too:

It teaches people what they can expect.

Consistency creates confidence.

Clear communication reduces uncertainty.

Follow-through strengthens credibility.

Honest conversations create room for better solutions.

And over time, those experiences accumulate.

That accumulation becomes trust.

Trust isn’t simply a “people issue.” It has a business impact.

Poor communication creates rework. Avoided conversations delay progress. Confusing priorities consume valuable time. Turnover creates expense. Slow or misaligned decisions limit momentum.

Organizational friction has a cost.

Which leads to a connection I believe leaders cannot afford to overlook:

Better decisions build trust. Trust reduces friction. And reduced friction creates stronger conditions for performance and profitability.

TRUST STARTS WITHIN

When we talk about organizational trust, it can be tempting to immediately look outward.

Do we need a new initiative?
A team-building exercise?
Better communication tools?
Another leadership program?

Those tools can absolutely be valuable. They can even help reveal where trust may be missing.

But trust begins somewhere else.

It begins with the individual.

A leader who trusts themselves has a greater capacity for clarity, honesty, accountability, boundaries, and difficult decisions.

Without that internal alignment, leadership can become reactive.

Decisions may be influenced by fear, assumptions, expectations, or the need for approval rather than by what matters most.

This is why awareness matters so much.

Awareness gives us the opportunity to pause long enough to recognize what is driving a decision before that decision impacts another person, a team, or an entire organization.

There is a ripple effect:

Personal trust influences decisions.
Decisions influence relationships.
Relationships influence results.

MOVING BEYOND PRODUCTIVITY

Productivity was never the problem.

The bigger question is:

What makes high performance sustainable?

A team can produce extraordinary numbers while trust quietly deteriorates underneath the results.

For a while, everything may look successful.

Until it doesn’t.

Eventually, the cost begins to show up—in communication, engagement, retention, decision-making, relationships, and ultimately, results.

So the goal cannot simply be to produce more.

The goal is to create an environment where people can think clearly, communicate honestly, make aligned decisions, follow through consistently, and move toward meaningful results together.

And that realization has brought even greater clarity to the work I do:

I help business leaders and high-performing teams identify and implement decisions that drive trust so they can accelerate profitability.

Three elements are at the center of that work:

Decisions. Trust. Profitability.

Or, said another way:

People. Decisions. Impact.

DECISIONS THAT DRIVE TRUST

Every decision communicates something.

A value.

A priority.

An expectation.

A commitment.

And whether we realize it or not, the people around us are paying attention.

Over time, our decisions become evidence.

Evidence that our words and actions align.

Evidence that expectations are clear.

Evidence that commitments matter.

Evidence that we can have difficult conversations and remain connected.

Evidence that we can be trusted.

That’s why sustainable high performance isn’t simply about producing more.

It grows from clearer decisions, stronger trust, less friction, and accountability for meaningful results.

So perhaps the question for leaders isn’t simply:

“How can we be more productive?”

Perhaps the better question is:

“What decisions are we making today that are teaching people whether or not they can trust us tomorrow?”

Because every decision drives a result.

Every decision communicates a value.

And every decision creates an opportunity to build trust.

That is the work behind Decisions That Drive Trust.
