
Most leaders eventually discover that working harder isn't always the answer.
Sometimes the next step isn't more effort.
Sometimes it's more clarity.
Over the years, I've observed that many leadership challenges are not rooted in a lack of intelligence, experience, or commitment. More often than not, they are connected to a decision that has been postponed.
Perhaps it's:
- a difficult conversation.
- a responsibility that needs to be delegated.
- a standard that needs clarification.
- a relationship that needs attention.
- a change that everyone knows is necessary, but no one has addressed.
If you're facing a leadership challenge right now, pause and ask yourself one question:
What future am I creating by not deciding?
Sit with that question for a moment.
The answer often reveals more than another meeting, another strategy session, or another productivity tool.
Because the quality of our leadership is often reflected in the decisions we are willing to make.
And perhaps even more importantly, in the decisions we have been avoiding.
Why This Matters
One thing I continue to learn is that many organizational challenges are not rooted in a lack of capability.
They are rooted in our willingness to continue growing.
Growth requires:
- humility,
- curiosity,
- reflection,
- and sometimes the courage to think differently.
It requires us to acknowledge that the way we've always done things may not be the way forward.
And that's okay.
None of us have arrived.
No matter our title, experience, or accomplishments, we are all evolving.
We are all learning.
We are all developing.
And we all have opportunities to show up better—for ourselves, for our teams, and for the people we serve.
Growth Never Stops
Over the past two decades, I've had the privilege of walking alongside leaders navigating growth, change, culture challenges, and leadership transitions.
And while the situations vary, one thing remains constant:
Healthy organizations begin with leaders who are willing to keep growing.
That observation is one of the reasons I created the Decision Lab.
Not because leaders need more information.
But because leaders need space.
Space to think.
Space to reflect.
Space to challenge assumptions.
Space to gain clarity.
And space to learn alongside others who are committed to becoming better leaders and better humans.
Because every leader eventually arrives at a crossroads.
Not just once.
But again and again throughout life.
The question is not whether those moments will come.
The question is:
Who are you becoming as you walk through them?
Growth isn't a destination.
It's a journey.
And we don't have to walk it alone.
